Las Vegas Stars scorecard -- August 13, 1998

Stars starter Heath Murray gave up six runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth as the Salt Lake Buzz cruised to an 11-4 victory at Cashman Field Tuesday night. The loss, which dropped the Stars to seven games behind Fresno in the Pacific Coast League's South Division, overshadowed a two home run outing from Eddie Williams and the first homer of the season for Chris Prieto. ... Stars pitcher Brian Tollberg, originally scheduled to start Wednesday night, was scratched because of the flu. Stars manager Jerry Royster suspected the virus started with reliever Al Newman over the weekend, but isn't fearful of an untimely outbreak. "Newman had it first and started spreading it," Royster said. "When Tollberg came down with it (Tuesday ) we sent him in hopes of containing it. I think we'll be all right." ... Williams' blasts were only his third and fourth at Cashman Field this year, but marked his third multi-homer game of the season. His first moved him into third place on the Stars' career RBI list with 194. Williams has 54 career home runs for the Stars and needs one more to surpass Joe Lansford for second place. Dave Staton is first in homers with 60.... The Stars fell one hit shy of extending their streak of games with at least 10 hits. The string ended at 11. ... Las Vegas has hit 24 home runs in its last 18 games. ... Outfielder Aaron Guiel pinch-hit in the eighth inning and smacked a double off the center field wall in his first action since June 5. Guiel underwent laser surgery to correct stigmatisms in both eyes. ... Las Vegas resident Jeff Horn started at catcher for the Buzz. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. ... Utilityman Greg LaRocca, who has missed seven of the last eight games with a hamstring injury, will not play again until the weekend, according to Royster. But Royster claimed LaRocca "looked good" in workouts before Wednesday's game.

The Stars resume their four-game series against the Salt Lake Buzz at Cashman Field tonight at 7:05 p.m. Las Vegas right-hander Brian Tollberg (5-3, 5.99) will oppose right-hander Shane Bowers (7-5, 5.66). The series and the homestand conclude Friday night at 7:05 with right-hander Matt Clement (10-6, 3.88) facing Salt Lake right-hander Dan Perkins (1-0, 6.75).
