Gibbons endorses Guinn for governor

"The governor's race is about the future of Nevada," Gibbons, R-Nev., said Thursday at a news conference at Guinn's campaign headquarters. "Kenny Guinn is the best candidate in the governor's race."

Gibbons said he supports Guinn's priority campaign issues of safer and better education, lower taxes, governmental accountability and a secure future for the elderly.

"Kenny understands that Nevada is faced with a variety of challenges in the near future and that solutions will be arrived at through steady leadership and common sense."

Guinn has been dubbed the "anointed one" by the casino industry. He faces Maverick newcomer Aaron Russo in the Sept. 1 primary. Las Vegas Mayor Jan Jones, a Democrat, is also running for governor, declaring herself "the fly in the anointment."

Guinn was head of the school system in Las Vegas, a president of Southwest Gas Corp. and served as interim president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1994.

Gibbons said he and Guinn have been close friends since 1994.

"I look forward to working with a governor who shares my philosophy of less intrusive government in our day-to-day lives. For example, we both share opposition to the storage of nuclear waste in Nevada. Kenny also supports state industries such as mining," Gibbons said.

Gibbons will also announce his support for Guinn at news conferences today in Reno and Elko.
