Letter: Government must take steps to earn back respect for America

It used to be if the United States owned something in another country, we had enough military to protect it, and not just a handful of military personnel, who usually get killed when it's destroyed.

Even the United Nations has no respect for the United States, thanks to all those presidents who keep cutting the military. But of course, this country has become a suburb of every other country in the world, the real American people are slowly disappearing.

One of the reasons we are in this mess is that Washington, D.C., is too busy trying to find out about the president's love life. And if that's not bad enough, the Republicans want to hire another independent counsel to check into the Democratic fund-raising in 1996.

I say it's time for the Republicans to act like men, instead of babies. They had their turn messing up the country, and it always takes a Democrat to straighten it up. Maybe the people have wised up a little, and we will get a Democratic Congress this election.

It would be better then the do-nothing Congress we have now. We need to get rid of the independent counsels and put this country back on the right track. Then maybe we can use that money to build up our armed forces, before it's too late.

To get respect, you have to have the muscle to back it up. The United States has lost its muscle. I'm afraid every night when I go to bed, wondering who's going to bomb us first.
