Daniel Pineda, 38, was listed in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery Friday at University Medical Center.
Police were called Thursday to Pineda's residence near Lake Mead and Nellis boulevards after he got into an argument with his roommate over a broken window.
Police Capt. Greg Jolley said Pineda was shot once in the chest after he failed to obey orders to drop the gun.
Police realized the weapon was not real after they approached the wounded man.
The officer who fired the weapon was placed on paid administrative leave until the completion of an internal investigation into the shooting. His name will not be released until 48 hours after the incident.
