Letter: Election Day just around corner

The voice of Jack Nicholson endorsing a candidate, and I hope he is not Manchurian, reminded me that Election Day is just around the corner. Suddenly an avalanche of commercials is saturating the airwaves and soliciting our vote. The ads run the gamut, from the narration of a candidate's past performances accompanied by the sad tune of some sort of funeral March to the sleek avant-garde announcement of a Hollywood producer ready to upset the status-quo for the Go-Go!

For many years we Americans have dispatched poll watchers to Third World nations to verify the integrity of the paper ballot. Time is running out and there are not enough Jimmy Carter's around.

With the lack of faith in the Sequoia Pacific voting machine may I suggest to Kathryn Ferguson to post at every polling place a cardboard cut-out of a smiling Jimmy Carter to serve as a reminder of the past and a warning for the future. A sort of omen. That way voters can't say later on that they did not see the writing on the wall.
