Jones says has won battle with breast cancer

Jones was diagnosed with breast cancer in January and had a lumpectomy shortly after that to remove the malignant growth. She underwent radiation and completed her last chemotherapy treatment over the weekend.

"Jan Jones is in excellent health and the cancer is no longer an issue in her life," the mayor's doctor, Dr. Armando Giuiliano said at the UNLV Women's Center Tuesday. "She's an excellent example of how early detection, a strong mental and emotional outlook and excellent therapy saves lives."

Jones, a Democrat running for governor, said that if elected, she will make health care issues a priority.

"Women in this state are standing up and demanding quality health care, and I want them to know I'm listening," she said. "Nothing is more important to women and families than good health, and too often access to first-rate care can be a problem."

Jones said that as governor, she would amend the Nevada Patients' Bill of Rights to require all managed care organizations to allow women to see their OB-GYN without having to get a referral from their primary care physician first.
