Letter: Columnists views on education policy were right on the mark

The process of eliminating your right as a citizen to hold policy-makers accountable is ongoing and certainly not confined only to education.

The Integrated Resource Plan Advisory Committee was a totally unelected board that created the quarter-percent sales tax proposal. The Southern Nevada Strategic Planning Authority (growth committee) has 21 members, two-thirds of whom are unelected. The state budget number is created by a group of corporate executives (the Economic Forum) who hold statutory authority over the governor and Legislature.

The proposed school bond rollover will take we, the people, out of the $2.5 billion construction funding program for 10 years, replacing us with an "oversight" committee.

The principles of representative government are being tossed on the trash heap of history to be replaced by -- what? An oligarchy of corporate interests and public sector "insider" players unanswerable and unaccountable to the people.

Of course, there is a huge irony here. Hanlon, who uses his forum in the Sun to expose so much of the nonsense going on, as a public employee/elected official, violates the most fundamental and basic principle of our system of government -- the separation of powers.

As much as I respect Hanlon and agree with what he says, you know what? He doesn't belong on the state Board of Education.
