Letter: Telemarketing inmates are threat to consumers

Though not an Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa supporter, nevertheless, I praise her stand against inmates being used as telemarketers. Del Papa will ask the 1999 Legislature to ban such.

Fence-straddling Gov. Bob Miller has only asked the scandal-ridden Department of Prisons "to re-examine the ... proposal ... security measures."

I suggest Secretary of State Dean Heller, a man I respect, take a stronger stand against this scheme. I have faith he will, because he's for the people.

As for Prisons Director Bob Bayer -- he's the enemy of our safety. I opine he's bereft of common sense. Many law enforcement officers in Nevada and nationally condemn Bayer's scheme. Elementary, it's fraught with grave danger to the public. For example: fraud, robbery, murder, rape, etc., as the story indicates.

Some studies show prison recidivism is more than 70 percent. In short, released inmates go right back to crime. Because of Bayer they would be armed with information to victimize us.

If there were ever an issue we all have a personal vested interest in, this is it. The media is the Fourth Estate, the equal of any power in the state. Therefore, as the guardian of we the people, I beseech them all (press, radio talk shows and TV) to ensure this evil inmate scheme is not implemented.

I suggest the people write in protest to Bayer, Miller, Del Papa, et al. to stop this anti-public scheme. I already have.
