Trustees pick new school superintendent

Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday afternoon to approve a contract to hire Jim Hager for $135,000 a year. He also will get a $750-a-month car allowance and a $10,000-a-year payment into a tax-deferred annuity program.

Hagar currently heads a district in Kent, Wash., that's half the size of Washoe County's. He's expected to formally take over the reins Jan. 1.

He will serve as a part-time consultant until then while former Superintendent Marvin Moss stays on in an interim basis. Moss took over June 30 after former Superintendent Mary Nebgen left to go to law school.

Hager plans to stay on in Washington until he receives a formal contract at the Washoe County board's next meeting Aug. 26.

The Kent district has about 26,000 pupils to 51,000 in Washoe County.
