Columnist Peter Benton: Volunteers are needed for LVI

IF YOU ENJOY GOLF and would like to rub shoulders with PGA professionals, volunteering for the upcoming Las Vegas Invitational could be right up your alley.

This tournament, scheduled Oct. 14-18 at the TPC in Summerlin and the Desert Inn and Las Vegas Country Clubs, is looking for scorekeepers, greens reporters, and gallery control personnel.

Full training will be given to all volunteers; shirt, hat and socks will be provided, along with a Continental breakfast and daily lunch and a party at the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday.

The old Sahara Country Club, now the revamped Las Vegas National Golf Club, has some interesting non-golf specials.

It not only offers daily luncheon specials from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for both golfers and the general public, but has announced that its banquet facilities are available for weddings and parties.

YMCA golf

The YMCA of Southern Nevada, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building strong kids, strong families and strong communities, has its annual golf outing Monday.

Entry fee into this popular event (which this year will honor longtime Las Vegan Tom Weisner), is $300 per player or $1,100 per four-person team.

The scramble event, which will be played over the Stallion Mountain Country Club, will be proceeded by breakfast and conclude with an awards luncheon.

Roth irons

Congratulations to Canyon Gate's Joe Roth, who put together rounds of 72-71--143, to win the Las Vegas area PGA Chapter Championship over the par-72 Snow Mountain and Sun Mountain layouts at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort.

His five-stroke victory over Brad Church (TPC Canyons) and Chris Aune (Legacy) was one of the largest winning margins ever in this event.
