Daughtery retiring after 17 years

"There are things I'd like to do that I can't do while I'm dean," Robert Daugherty said on Tuesday.

He said his retirement would be effective at the end of the upcoming academic year, but that he would remain in the $227,461-a-year post until a successor can be found.

That search will begin immediately, University of Nevada, Reno president Joe Crowley said.

Daughtery, 64, was appointed dean in January 1981. He will become dean emeritus on July 1 and will join the medical school faculty as a professor of health care policy.

His wife Sandra will remain as a medical school professor and head of the Women's Health Initiative research project.

Daugherty said that when he joined the school, its budget was $9.9 million. It now receives nearly that much - $7.6 million - in sponsored research grants.

The school was threatened with closure by the Legislature when he took the helm and had about 50 faculty members in Reno and two in Las Vegas.

It currently has 190 faculty here, 60 in Las Vegas and a budget of $75 million.

"I am proud of our institution and in having accomplished what I set out to do as a medical educator," Daugherty said.
