* CHESS TOURNAMENT -- Nevada State Open chess champion Stan Vaughan will give a simultaneous exhibition 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the Italian American Supper Club of Southern Nevada, 2333 E. Sahara Ave. The public is invited to participate. The fee to play against the champion is $5, with all proceeds going to the Italian American Club and the Nevada State Chess Association. * HAIRCUTTING FUND-RAISER -- Academy of Hair Design together with Missing & Exploited Children is hosting a fund-raiser 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at 4445 W. Charleston Blvd in the Westland Fair Center. Haircuts are $5.50. The proceeds will be donated to the Missing & Exploited Children Fund. For details, call 878-1185.

* TOURS AVAILABLE -- Catholic Charities recently dedicated the first phase of its $25 million building project at 1501 Las Vegas Blvd. North. The Lied Dining Facility and the Fertitta Residential Center were officially opened by Bishop of Las Vegas Daniel Walsh. Catholic Charities is now offering tours to groups that may be interested in the operation of these structures. The dining facility offers hot, nutritious meals to the hungry and homeless of the community. The residential center provides overnight shelter to 200 men each day. The 30-year-old building that is on the current St. Vincent Plaza site will be demolished to make room for more facilities, including social services, migration and refugee services and immigration services offices, along with a POSTNET service center, a coin-operated laundry and employment services center. Low-cost transitional housing units are currently under construction at the north end of the site. For more information or to schedule a tour, call 385-2662.

* SHADE TREE DONATION -- The Summerlin Women's Club presented a check from proceeds from their second annual Food and Wine/Silent Auction to The Shade Tree shelter at the July 15 meeting. The donation helped the homeless shelter for women and children meet their $1 million mark toward the $3.2 million needed to complete their new facility. The existing facility is scheduled to be demolished within the year. The Summerlin Women's Club meets the third Wednesday of every month at the Trails Community Center at 1910 Spring Gate Lane. * FORUM SHOPS HONORED -- Barry Winter, director of security at the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace received an award that honors peace officers, security officers and citizens who carry out the deeds of protecting their local communities and being able to work as professionals in the justice community. Winter, a team member of the Simon DeBartolo Group's Security Procedures Operation Review Team is a senior security supervisor who has been singled out to receive this honor. In addition, Simon DeBartolo Group's SPORT has been presented with the Knights of Justice Award by the National Association of Chiefs of Police.

* NEW ADA MEMBER -- The American Diabetes Association has announced that Karen A. Wallace of Las Vegas was elected to its National Board of Directors at the organization's 58th annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions, held recently in Chicago. Wallace, a certified residential real estate specialist with Americana Group Realtors in Las Vegas, has been an active volunteer with the American Diabetes Association for many years.

Special needs

* CANCER STUDY -- The Jonsson Cancer Center at UCLA is conducting a new lung cancer study in Las Vegas. The study involves an experimental drug designed to cut off the flow of blood to tumors. By preventing new vessel growth, cancer cells starve and die. According to registered nurse Eve Stork, more patients are needed to volunteer for the program. Las Vegas was chosen as one of eight sites nationwide for Phase II testing on humans. Phase I testing, Stork said, was recently completed on animals and showed impressive results. * COMMUNITY ANGELS -- Community Angels Inc., is holding a drive to collect baby and toddler clothing, formula, diapers (mostly large), baby food and bottles, among others, to help replenish supplies in its baby pantry that will be distributed to at-risk moms and babies in Southern Nevada. * WOMEN'S LECTURE -- Joan Furey, director of the Center For Women Veterans, Washington D.C., will present "My Life as a Veteran & Federal Woman Employee, Past, Present and Future." The presentation will be from 8:30- 10 a.m. Aug. 26 at the VA Medical Center Auditorium, first floor, 1700 Vegas Drive. There will be a complimentary continental breakfast. * RUMMAGE SALE -- Donations are needed for an October rummage sale, which will benefit veterans. To help the Arville House, a program of the Las Vegas Veterans Administration Medical Center, call Paul or Ken, 259-4646. Your donations can be picked up.

Volunteers

* SHAMROCK FARMS DONATION -- Shamrock Farms recently donated a computer system valued at $1,500 to Sunrise Children's Hospital Child Life Services. The computer will better enable the children to keep up with their schoolwork and entertain themselves with educational games. Shamrock Farms served some of its homemade ice cream during the presentation.

* BABY? THINK IT OVER! -- The teen pregnancy program "Baby? Think It Over!" has hired Candy S. Krausman as its new coordinator. Krausman has been a Las Vegas resident for more than 40 years. She is the past president of Sunkisses, the volunteer auxiliary of Sunrise Children's Hospital Foundation. She is also an author and editor. The teen pregnancy program is a partnership between Sunrise Children's Hospital Foundation and the Clark County School District. The program places normal and simulated drug-dependant computerized infant dolls in all county high schools and middle schools. The Hebrew Academy, Bishop Gorman High School, Las Vegas Academy and St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church also are participants in the program.

* SPORTS COACHES -- Frontier Girl Scout Council is looking for volunteer sports coaches (women and men) to assist/lead 10 hours per month in adding depth to the national Girl Scout Sports Initiative. It is also looking for female role models 18 years and older to serve as mentors for girls 12-17 in "specialized circumstances." This programs requires four to fives hours a month in structured environments of workshops and field trips. For details, call 385-3677.
