Ex-Star Velandia sparks Trappers

EDOMONTON, Alberta -- Former Las Vegas Star Jorge Velandia stroked a two-run single highlighting a six-run, fifth-inning outburst that carried the Edmonton Trappers to a 12-7 victory over the Stars in a Pacific Coast League baseball game Sunday night.

The Stars were cruising with a 4-1 lead before the Trappers went to work against Las Vegas starter Brian Tollberg (6-5). Edmonton scored two runs in the fourth, then took command in the fifth, building a 9-4 lead.

The Stars' deficit grew to 12-4 before Las Vegas pushed across three runs in the ninth. Aaron Guiel had a run-scoring double and Creighton Gubanich added an RBI single in the ninth but the rally fell way short.

Las Vegas scored four times in the second inning to take the early lead. Juan Melo and Chris Prieto each had RBI singles as the Stars provided Tollberg with an early cushion.

Tollberg yielded eight runs, 10 hits and a walk in four-plus innings. He also struck out four. Marcus Jones (6-5) pitched five innings to pick up the win for the Trappers.

The teams meet again at 6:05 today.
