Jury to decide penalty against convicted killer

Talbert was 17 years old when authorities said he opened fire with a sawed-off rifle during a confrontation between rival gangs in northeast Reno in January 1997.

Eliseo Mena, 17, was killed. His brother, Alfredo Mena, was shot in the back and paralyzed. Another young man, Erick Chagolla, was shot in the leg.

Jurors on Monday convicted Talbert of one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The panel will decide whether he should be sentenced to death or life in prison for the murder conviction.
