Man pleads guilty in DUI fatality

A man whose car slammed into another vehicle on New Year's Eve, resulting in the death of the other motorist, has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Sergio Navarro, 22, of North Las Vegas, could serve from two to 20 years in prison on his guilty plea, District Court Judge Michael Douglas told the defendant Monday. Navarro's attorney, in a plea bargain, is attempting to get a 3 1/2-to-eight-year sentence and a fine of $2,000.

Sentencing has been scheduled for Oct. 19 at 9 a.m.

Navarro, while reportedly driving his 1992 Dodge Dynasty with the lights off, struck a 1989 Honda driven by Salman Siddiqui, 27, of Las Vegas, in the early morning hours of Jan. 1 at Harmon Avenue, west of Paradise Road. Siddiqui died at the scene.

Witnesses said they saw Navarro traveling more than the 35 mph speed limit. After striking Siddiqui's car, police reports said Navarro's vehicle spun into a nearby hotel parking lot and hit a parked vehicle.

A passenger in Siddiqui's car and Navarro were treated and released from University Medical Center.

Siddiqui reportedly left the parking lot at the St. Tropez Hotel and was traveling east on Harmon when his vehicle was struck at 4:37 a.m. by Navarro.
