Sparks to plant marina park with fish

The Sparks City Council has voted to spend $35,000 to buy about 2,500 commercially raised trout ranging in size from four to eight pounds for the Sparks Marina Park, scheduled to open in October.

The council hopes the large trout will entice anglers to the site of the former Helms gravel pit.

The city is also working with the Nevada Department of Wildlife to stock the lake with 8,000 small trout that will be taken from the supply in the Truckee River.

But those trout, which will average only five to seven ounces, will not be available until the spring. The 1999 allocation will be paid by federal funding programs and local matches.

A local bass fishing club also has expressed interest in stocking the Sparks Marina Park with spotted bass.
