Lane issued a statement saying he would stay neutral after candidate Jerry Polaha began running a TV ad featuring a past complimentary statement about him by Lane.
"A question has arisen regarding my endorsement of candidates" in the race, Lane said in a letter to candidate James Hardesty. "I wish to make clear that I am endorsing no candidate in that race at this time."
Earlier this year, Lane resigned to become the star of a courtroom TV show. In late April, Gov. Bob Miller appointed Margaret Springgate to fill his unexpired term, which ends in January.
