Cop in serious condition after traffic accident

A Metro Police motorcycle officer remained in serious condition at University Medical Center today after an accident with a pick-up truck at the intersection of Karen and Eastern avenues at Sunday night.

Officer Johnath Ankeny was northbound on Eastern about 10:51 p.m. and entered the Karan intersection on a yellow light, witnesses said.

Elaine Springer was in the Southbound left turn lane on Eastern and started to make the turn onto Karan when the accident occurred.

Two witnesses Michael Sawyer and Jimmy Garcia said that Ankeny tried to decelerate, but the motorcycle still struck the front of the Toyota. Debris from the collision struck Garcia and Sawyer in the crosswalk.

Springer was treated and released from Desert Springs Hospital with minor injuries, Sawyer was treated for a minor injury at the scene and Garcia was not injured.
