Obituaries for January 8, 1998

Bernard Aronowitz, 79, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospital. He was born Jan. 5, 1919, in New York City. A 12-year resident, he was a retired owner of several small businesses, a World War II Army veteran who was a prisoner of war for nine months, a member of the Ex-POW Group, Disabled American Veterans and the Los Angeles Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; one daughter, Anne Kaplan of Los Angeles; one sister, Sally Winkler of New York City; and four grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Graveside services will follow in Palm Valley View Memorial Park. Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd., is handling arrangements.

JUNE R. BECKERMAN

June R. Beckerman, 88, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospital. She was born June 4, 1909, in Hungary. A 50-year resident, she was a retired cashier.

She is survived by one nephew, Joe Malinak of Las Vegas.

Visitation is scheduled 1-5 p.m. Friday in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Palm Chapel, Main. Graveside services will be private.

WILLIAM HENRY BENDER

William Henry Bender, 48, of Las Vegas died Sunday in Las Vegas. He was born Aug. 25, 1949, in New Jersey. An 18-year resident, he was a taxicab driver and a Marine Corps veteran.

He is survived by one son, William H. Bender II, and one daughter, Amy M. Bender, both of Henderson; his mother, Mary E. Bender of South Amboy, N.J.; and three sisters, Cathy DelChapo of New Jersey, Theresa Clayton of South Amboy and Peggy Bender of North Brunswick, N.J.

Visitation will continue until 8 p.m. today in Bunker Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Graveside services will be 8:30 a.m. Friday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday in St. Bridget's Church.

ADA BEATRICE DIXON

Ada Beatrice Dixon, 85, of North Las Vegas died Saturday in North Las Vegas. She was born Feb. 7, 1912, in Delhi, La. A six-year resident, she was a member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Mae Dixon and Florean Travis, both of North Las Vegas; one brother, Willie George Dixon of Oakland, Calif.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

GARRY WAYNE DURST-GREEN

Garry Wayne Durst-Green, 51, of Las Vegas died Sunday in a local hospital. He was born July 8, 1946, in Washington, Iowa. A 48-year resident, he was a drag racer for 35 years.

He is survived by his father, Wayne Frederick Durst of Rosemead, Calif.

A celebration of life will be held later. Nevada Funeral Service-Nevada Cremation or Burial Society, 2121 Western Ave., Suite A-3, is handling arrangements.

BERNARD 'BOB' ELLIS

Bernard "Bob" Ellis, 81, of Las Vegas died Friday in a local hospital. He was born April 30, 1916, in New York City. A nine-year resident, he was a retired uniform salesman and a member of Daylite Masonic Lodge 46.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Mitchell Ellis of Emeryville, Calif., and Marvin Eisenstein of Edison, N.J.; one daughter, Linda Bender of Poway, Calif.; two sisters, Martha Serin of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Essie Auerbach of Studio City, Calif.; one brother, Max Eisenstein of Fort Lauderdale; and six grandchildren.

ANNA 'HELEN' R. HANDLEY

Anna "Helen" R. Handley, 89, of Las Vegas died Sunday in Elko. She was born Oct. 26, 1908, in Buffalo, N.Y. A 31-year resident, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter, Alice Hunton of Elko; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation was scheduled noon-3 p.m. today in Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave. Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City.

COLETTA MARGARET KUPPER

Coletta Margaret Kupper, 93, of Henderson died Wednesday in Henderson. She was born Aug. 24, 1904, in Cleveland. A 42-year resident, she was a homemaker and a member of Purple Heart Mothers.

She is survived by two sons, Walter Kupper of Henderson and William Kupper of San Jose, Calif.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled noon-8 p.m. Sunday in Bunker Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday in St. Peter's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Ohio.

QUINCY LEWIS

Quincy Lewis, 33, of Las Vegas died Friday in Las Vegas. He was born Nov. 23, 1964, in Gary, Ind. A 12-year resident, he was a dealer who worked at the Four Queens for the past 11 years.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his mother, Nannetta Groce of Las Vegas; his father, Lester Lewis of Gary; two sisters, Christy Lewis of Gary and Vivian Scott of Las Vegas; and two brothers, Preston Lewis of Calumet City, Ill., and Jeffery Lewis of Indianapolis.

Visitation is scheduled 2-7 p.m. Friday in Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Palm Chapel, Jones. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Park.

JAMES F. MAY

James F. May, 70, of North Las Vegas died Saturday in North Las Vegas. He was born April 22, 1927, in Louisiana. A 47-year resident, he was a retired Nevada Test Site maintenance worker, an Army veteran and a member of the Elks.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia; two sons, James Jr. and Terry; two daughters, Marilyn and Janice; three sisters, Willie Mae Wilson, Doris Pearson and Clara M. Noble; one brother, Johnnie Brumfield; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 3-9 p.m. Friday in Harrison-Ross Mortuaries, 2071 Las Vegas Blvd. North, North Las Vegas. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in New Bethel Baptist Church, 400 W. Adams, Las Vegas. Burial will be Monday in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City.

SHIRLEY MCANDREWS

Shirley McAndrews, 68, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Las Vegas. She was born Nov. 9, 1929, in Missouri. A four-year resident, she was a retired executive secretary in the communications industry.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Schell of Las Vegas and Gregory McAndrews of Marina Del Rey, Calif.; two daughters, Debra Rees of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Sheri Sweitzer of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

No local services are scheduled. Bunker Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling arrangements.

RUTH MERRICK

Ruth Merrick, 93, of Las Vegas died Saturday in a local health care facility. She was born Oct. 26, 1904, in Healy, Kan. A 50-year resident, she was a retired registered nurse.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was scheduled 10 a.m. until noon today with an 11 a.m. service in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Graveside services were to follow in Palm Memorial Park.

ANDREA MOORE

Andrea Moore, 24, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Las Vegas. She was born Dec. 8, 1973, in Columbus, Ohio. A one-month resident, she was a school district clerical assistant.

She is survived by her father, Michael Moore of Las Vegas; her mother, Margaret Hurd, and two sisters, Alisa Moore and Keisha Hogan, all of Fullerton, Calif.; and her grandparents, Warren Moore of Pasadena, Calif., and Edith Williams of Silver Springs, Md.

Services will be 12:30 p.m. Friday in Davis Funeral Home, 2127 W. Charleston Blvd.

NICHOLAS ANDREW NESCI

Nicholas Andrew Nesci, 3 months, died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born Sept. 29, 1997, in Las Vegas.

He is survived by his parents, Diane and Thomas Nesci of Las Vegas; and his grandparents, Kenneth and Madalen Tiffany of Jackson, Mo., and Barbara and Donald Nesci of Las Vegas.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Burial will follow in Palm Valley View Memorial Park.

GERALD J. PARSONS

Gerald J. Parsons, 77, of Henderson died Wednesday in a local hospital. He was born April 13, 1920, in Atwater, Minn. A 35-year resident, he was a retired Basic High School teacher from 1963-1987, a World War II Marine Corps veteran, a member of the American Legion and Clark County Teachers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Steffens Parsons.

Services and burial will be in Eldorado, Iowa. Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, is handling arrangements.

KATIE SORGI

Katie Sorgi, 91, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local health care center. She was born May 16, 1906, in Rochester, N.Y. An eight-year resident, she was a homemaker and a member of the Moose Lodge, El Monte Lodge 1097 in California.

She is survived by one son, Marco Frank Sorge of Las Vegas; one sister, Phoebe Zampini of Lancaster, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 2-7 p.m. Friday with a 6 p.m. service in Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd.

EUGENE STORK

Eugene Stork, 64, of Las Vegas died Saturday in a local hospital. He was born Feb. 10, 1933, in Chicago. A 15-year resident, he was disabled.

He is survived by one aunt.

ROBERT SYLVESTER

Robert Sylvester, 71, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospital. He was born July 8, 1926, in Hoboken, N.J. A 17-year resident, he was a retired hotel chief engineer and a World War II and Korean War Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian; three sons, Mark Thomas of Las Vegas and Robert Sylvester Jr. and Michael Sylvester; two daughters, Leith Vanlue and Kelly Thomas, and one brother, Kenneth Sylvester, all of Las Vegas; one sister, Virginia Perrone of New Jersey; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services were 11 a.m. today in Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave.

STEWART J. THOMPSON

Stewart J. Thompson, 49, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born May 27, 1948, in Detroit. A 31-year resident, he was a slot manager at the Royal Casino.

He is survived by his wife, Hong; one son, Robert Thompson of Las Vegas; two sisters, Helene Clehr of Santa Fe, N.M., and Helen Tucek of Pahrump; and two brothers, Adam Moise and Noah Moise, both of Tucson, Ariz.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Guardian Angel Cathedral, 336 Cathedral Way. Nevada Funeral Service-Nevada Cremation or Burial Society, 2121 Western Ave., Suite A-3, is handling arrangements.

JORDON WILMORE

Jordon Wilmore, 96, of North Las Vegas died Saturday in a local care center. He was born July 25, 1901, in Winnsboro, La. A two-month resident, he was a retired machinist for a wood mill.

He is survived by five daughters, Viola Newman, Leola Walker, Elizabeth Moore and Mary Lee Wilmore, all of Las Vegas, and Easter Mae Holmes of Kansas City, Kan.; two sons, Jordon Wilmore Jr. of Tallulah, La., and Thomas Wilmore of Kansas City; three sisters, Evelyn Appleton of Kansas City and Hannah Hicks and Joanne Sansberry, both of Las Vegas; 40 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Greater Carver Missionary Baptist Church. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Cemetery.
