High court candidates unopposed

Justice Miriam Shearing will get a second 6-year term on the Supreme Court. She'll be joined on the high court in January by District Judges Nancy Becker of Las Vegas and Deborah Agosti of Reno who, in their first statewide races, drew no opposition.

Until Shearing was elected to the court in 1992, Nevada never had a woman Supreme Court justice. Now the court will have three women among its seven members.

All still must go through the formality of the Nov. 3 general election, facing only the prospect of nonbinding protest votes under Nevada's "none of these candidates" ballot option.

Democrats and Republicans were required to file their candidacies by May 18. Minor party candidates had until Wednesday to file, and only a few showed up.

Also Wednesday, Secretary of State Dean Heller rejected the Reform Party's attempt to file William T. Sisson as a candidate to run against him in the November election. Heller said the party missed a June 26 deadline to turn in its slate of candidates.

Also winding up with no opposition were: Assembly members Barbara Cegavske, R-Las Vegas; Barbara Buckley and David Goldwater, both D-Las Vegas; David Humke, R-Reno; John Marvel, R-Battle Mountain; and Lynn Hettrick, R-Gardnerville. State senators with no opponents include Bill O'Donnell, R-Las Vegas, and Randolph Townsend, R-Reno.

Sen. Mark James, R-Las Vegas, drew Libertarian Jerry Sims as his sole District 8 opponent when Sims filed his candidacy shortly before the deadline.
