Beachegoers warned of chilly Tahoe waters

While Lake Tahoe is never warm, the U.S. Coast Guard says heavy winter snowmelt is keeping the lake even colder than normal. Temperatures range from the 40s to the 60s.

And while a quick dip and a few goosebumps might feel refreshing after basking in the sun, officials warn that prolonged exposure could result in hypothermia.

"It's nothing to play around with, that's for sure," said Petty Officer Chris Allaire, of the Coast Guard's Lake Tahoe station.

Anyone planning on spending a lot of time in the water is advised to wear a full wet suit and head gear, Allaire said.
