Letter: Newscast's take on Father's Day lacks professional standards

A tasteless newscast, which aired June 21 on KVBC Channel 3, dealt with fathers behind bars. The entire idea lacked any professional taste and it caused my wife and I great distress to see such individuals given any air time.

The mere idea that they would cover the "terrible" isolation these so-called fathers felt is simply horrendous. I am a new father. We celebrated our first Father's Day this year. Our daughter is three months old. But, we were unable to spend it together as a family because my wife works at a local hospital.

However, I did not see any Channel 3 vans in front of my house showing the people of Las Vegas how sad and lonely we were. Instead I was treated to seeing how a convicted drug dealer is forced to be a father to his daughter from behind the glass. Maybe he should have thought about that before he broke the law.

If they wanted to show what Father's Day really means, they could have shown children of police officers who were killed in the line of duty by those drug dealers. I bet those daughters would love to be able to see their fathers. Better yet, they could have done an expose on the fathers that do an honest day's work to support their children, pay taxes and attend every activity their child participates in. These are the real fathers who should be applauded.

I suppose next Mother's Day the station will report on "Mothers who sell their formula to score crack and the trouble they have finding a buyer." Trust me, my wife and I will not be watching.

One last thought: Channel 3 should leave the trash journalism to Jerry Springer; he already has the market cornered.
