Carlin landmark burns down

Fire Chief Will Johnston said the blaze started Friday night in a kitchen grill and spread quickly through the rest of the building.

Firefighters were unable to put it out until Saturday morning.

The historic bar-restaurant was open when the fire broke out, but less than a dozen people were evacuated and no one was injured.

The owners, John Fong, and his son, John Jr., operated the business for 27 years and had no fire insurance.

The two-story brick and rock structure was one of Carlin's original buildings and was believed to date back to the late 1800s.

The fire caused water and smoke damage to adjacent buildings.
