Cash-strapped sheriff down to one deputy

Sheriff Bernie Romero said that both his department and the city of Ely are strapped for cash, and the city is not renewing its previous subsidization of the county's protection.

He said that even calls to the county will have to be answered on a priority basis and his department is down one deputy to save money.

The city has called for a resumption of talks on law enforcement. They are scheduled to begin on Thursday.
