CCSN breaks ground on campus expansion

The Community College of Southern Nevada -- the country's fastest growing two-year college -- is set to expand its Henderson campus Tuesday by breaking ground for a $17 million academic and computer center.

The new 90,000-square-foot complex at 700 College Drive will more than double the Henderson campus, which now includes two buildings, a greenhouse and surrounding landscape.

The center will house classrooms, faculty offices, science facilities and labs and a computer superlab. It will be built adjacent to a high school currently under construction at College Drive and Heather Street, and the facilities will be shared by high school and college students.

"This is a model for the country," John Kuminecz, CCSN's public affairs director, said, and added that this project marks the first time that a high school and college have been connected on this scale.

"The Clark County School District and the college administration got together and brainstormed to design this facility," Kuminecz said.

The academic and computer center is scheduled to open by fall 1999.

The 10 a.m. ceremony is expected to attract speakers including state Sen. Jon Porter, R-Boulder City; Assemblyman Richard Perkins, D-Henderson; Assemblywoman Sandra Tiffany, R-Henderson; and regents Mark Alden and Shelley Berkley, as well as Henderson Mayor James Gibson and CCSN President Dr. Richard Moore. The public is invited.
