Miller's chief of staff latest to step down

Mulhall said there is no definite date of departure, but he has been discussing working with the Nevada Resort Association. While there is no firm job offer, he said one is expected.

Mulhall, 41, has held the top job in the Miller administration for more than three years. Prior to that he worked for Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev.

Mulhall is the fourth upper-echelon administration official to leave the Miller administration which ends in six months.

Claudia Cormier, director of the state Department of Business and Industry, resigned effective last week to go into private industry. Richard Urey, press secretary for Miller, left to join the campaign staff for congressional candidate Shelley Berkley.

And Ron Swirczek, director of the state Division of Industrial Relations, is moving out of that job to take a position protected by civil service.

"We're nearing the end of an administration, and I think it's pretty consistent with other administrations that individuals start exploring what they are going to do," Miller said.

"I know every five minutes somebody asks me what I'm going to do in six months," he added. "I don't have an answer for that.

"I have some very good people on board and we have been able to make some hires which I think have been beneficial."

For example, Misty Young, former public information officer for Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa, has joined the governor's staff.

"We have two other individuals -- one who has government experience in the Midwest wants to re-locate to Nevada and the second, who has worked for government and university systems most recently in Arizona, wants to move to Nevada," the governor said. "They both are willing to come in at lesser salaries for six months to establish themselves in Nevada. So we have been able to find a few good people to fill in for those who are departing."
