Ex-cop charged with possessing bogus bills

A former Metro Police officer who was fired over theft allegations in 1995 has been charged with possessing counterfeit $100 bills that were alleged to have been produced on an office copying machine.

Ronald Pearce, 40, is facing federal court charges of possessing 11 bogus bills on June 25.

Secret Service Agent Mary Brooks stated in an affidavit that Pearce admitted passing at Target and K-mart stores in late June counterfeit bills that he had produced on a copier he purchased about 10 days earlier. Pearce is alleged to have bleached small-denomination currency and reused the paper in the counterfeiting.

Pearce's 1995 indictment in state court charged him with passing off his girlfriend, Shelly Adams, as his wife so that she could obtain dental care on his insurance policy. They both pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanor charges in a plea bargain and paid fines.
