Editorial: President sends a strong message

Clinton cited reports that some companies, which cover federal employees, have failed to comply with a 1996 federal law authored by then-Sen. Nancy Kassebaum, R-Kan., and Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass. The intent of the law was crystal clear: People who move from one job to another are supposed to be eligible for health insurance coverage if their new employer offers these benefits to their employees.

Expect the 350 health insurance companies, which cover federal employees and are affected by Clinton's executive order, to squeal about any form of regulation over their business, no matter how warranted it is. But too many health insurance companies have proven time and time again that they have little respect for patient care, and instead care singularly about the profits that they can churn out of patients who are at their mercy.
