Letter: Biker's death in collision with cop car should be a learning experience

Even though the officer was "just a guy trying to do the right thing," there can be no justification for crossing the median on a major arterial used by thousands daily. Whether or not the anonymous officer had activated his lights and siren, the motorcyclist entered into the curved section road without a long length of visibility and did not have a chance.

The officer was extremely lucky he did not run into one of the 18 wheelers that frequent the road 24 hours a day. If in fact the investigating officer's theory about the straight-lining of the "s" curves is correct, the involved officer's decision was a grave mistake that should never be allowed to happen again.

I hope this tragic incident can be a learning experience for all of us that the center divider is there for a reason, for the orderly and safe flow of traffic.
