Police honor Moya Lear for donation of patrol car cameras

Mrs. Lear attended the ceremony at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno after being told by Washoe County Sheriff Richard Kirkland's assistant that Kirkland was going to be honored.

"These fellas sandbagged me," Mrs. Lear said after she received four plaques from the Washoe County District Attorney's Office, the Reno Police Department, the Sparks Police Department and the sheriff's office. Maj. James Farmer of the Nevada Highway Patrol then presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Sparks and the NHP each got two of the 10 cameras while three each went to Reno police and the sheriff's office, the Daily Sparks Tribune reported.

The main purpose of the cameras is to videotape field sobriety tests and other traffic stops to help prosecutors gain evidence for convictions, especially for DUI.

Mrs. Lear, the widow of Lear Jet inventor Bill Lear, said she made the donation after her daughter-in-law and grandchildren were involved in a head-on accident with a drunken driver.
