Editorial: Garbage company looks for answers

Most recently, Silver State was eyeing a 10-acre tract of land near Blue Diamond Road. But neighbors, including the magician Teller of the Penn & Teller duo, objected and prompted the company to yank its proposal. Prior to that, when the Cheyenne transfer station reached its capacity, Silver State wanted a site near Flamingo Road. But some of the company's prospective neighbors vehemently protested, causing Silver State to withdraw its proposal.

After facing such strong neighborhood opposition, the Las Vegas garbage company on Tuesday sought the help of the Clark County Commission in finding a solution. As the Sun's Adrienne Packer reported, commissioners agreed to assist in finding locations for transfer stations and designate land for these stations in master plans.

Company officials say a new transfer station is needed near residential areas because it reduces the wear and tear on their vehicles. In addition, it decreases the number of garbage trucks on highways.

Based on the company's recent track record in trying to find a home for a new transfer station, maybe the assistance of the County Commission can turn things around. If the county and the company are indeed serious about finding an appropriate solution, they should be able to find a place for a garbage transfer station that is both economical and doesn't disturb residential neighborhoods.
