LV deputy chief misses top police job in Spokane

Metro Police Deputy Chief Paul Conner will remain in Las Vegas following a highly competitive race for a seat as police chief in Spokane, Wash.

Conner was one of three contenders for the $87,000 a year post, which the current chief will vacate July 20.

The police chief position was offered to, and accepted by, Alan Chertok, 45, a police commander in Newport News, Va., said Bill Pupo, Spokane city manager.

"I was in the enviable situation where I couldn't make a mistake, whoever I chose," Pupo said. "All three were excellent candidates, and Conner is great in the police administration area."

The seven-month application process began last December when the position was offered. A total of 26 people applied, with Conner making it as one of three finalists including Chertok and John Robertson, 47, former chief of police in Orange, Calif. Spokane officials made their decision last week.

Pupo and other Spokane officials were in Las Vegas a few weeks ago interviewing local police and citizens to learn more about Conner. Pupo said the Las Vegas community gave Conner a strong endorsement.

"Paul Conner is a consummate professional, an outstanding individual and has no weaknesses. (Las Vegas) is very fortunate to have him."

Conner is out of the office this week and could not be reached for comment.

Conner's wife is originally from Spokane, a city of 180,000 residents.

The Spokane Police Department has 288 sworn police officers and 150 civilian employees. It operates with a $30 million budget.
