Library board sketches plan to pick leader

Time is drawing short in the search for a new library director if one is to be chosen by the Las Vegas-Clark County Library Board before the contract with an interim director runs out in September.

Carl Rowe, an employee of the business consulting firm of Fair, Anderson and Langerman, said during the board's monthly meeting Thursday initial interviews of candidates will begin sometime after the August board meeting.

He told the board, meeting at Summerlin Library, that interviews should go fairly quickly since what the members expect in the new director are well-defined.

The biggest problem is finding a time when all of the board members can be there at the same time for the interviews that are expected to take two or three days.

Rowe said in the event a new director is not selected by the end of the contract in September he could continue in his capacity on a month-to-month basis.

In other business, new Sunday library hours at the Las Vegas Library were announced -- instead of being open from noon to 5 p.m. the facility at 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North will open at 1 p.m., which is the hour the other two regional libraries open.

Also the number of hours that the Laughlin Library is open will be reduced from 68 hours per week to 60 hours.

The new hours will result in the facility closing at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
