Thawley, 51, succeeds Bernard Jones, who resigned after nearly 17 years as dean to join the school of veterinary medicine as a professor.
He also will become director of UNR's agricultural experiment station, a position he held at the University of Missouri before he moved to Minnesota 12 years ago.
UNR also named Karen Hinton, western area director for the school's cooperative extension program, interim dean of cooperative extension's statewide programs until the search is completed for a permanent dean. That position also was held by Jones.
