NLV cops hope to keep cool with shorts

If you need a cop in North Las Vegas, better not whistle because they might take offense.

For the next few weeks a select group of patrol officers will be testing a new uniform that includes short pants.

"The department is exploring the possibility of allowing uniformed officers the option of wearing approved patrol style shorts in lieu of standard uniform slacks during the portion of the year in which temperatures are traditionally very warm and/or excessively hot," Lt. Mike Blackwell said.

According to Blackwell, the main objective of the policy is to "enhance officer comfort and productivity during this season while maintaining an authoritative and professional appearance that will be accepted and respected by the public."

At the end of the evaluation period an assessment will be made based on comments from the officers who wore the shorts, their supervisors, other officers and the public.

Blackwell called the shorts policy "a morale booster and good economical step, due to the fact that the shorts are a third of the price of normal uniform pants."
