Seven apply to fill judicial post

CARSON CITY -- Seven Las Vegas lawyers -- four in government agencies and three in private practice -- have applied to fill the unexpired term of Clark County District Judge Don Chairez who resigned to run for Congress.

The state Commission on Judicial Selection said Thursday the applicants are scheduled to be interviewed the week of Aug. 10. Of the applicants, three names will be submitted to Gov. Bob Miller, who would make the final selection.

Those who applied by Wednesday's deadline include Kenneth C. Cory, 54; Nicholas A. Del Vecchio, 41; and Mark R. Denton, 46, all in private practice in Las Vegas.

Others are Stephen L. George, 35, deputy city attorney for Las Vegas; Donald H. Haight, 50, chief deputy attorney general for the state; Philip Kohn, 47, a deputy public defender in Clark County; and Mark E. Wood, 45, a deputy district attorney in Clark County.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Springer, chairman of the selection commission, said each applicant submitted a comprehensive application answering 56 questions about the individual's education, law practice, business involvement and community involvement.

The person selected will serve until January.

The office will be up for election in November. Those wanting to run must collect signatures of registered voters on a petition amounting to 1 percent of those who voted for the office in the last election. The petition, according to the secretary of state's office, must be filed with the Clark County voter registrar by Sept. 15.
