State says effort to recall NLV councilwoman fails

Secretary of State Dean Heller announced that his office's investigation of signatures on a petition to force a recall election showed 317 names were valid out of 500 sampled.

That's one signature short of the number needed to require the Clark County registrar of voters to conduct a full verification of all 2,760 signatures on the petition.

Had the 100 percent verification process been required, a minimum of 1,930 valid signatures would have been needed to force a special recall election.

As part of Heller's investigation, staffers interviewed seven people whose signatures were rejected earlier by the Clark registrar. The petitioners said all seven were valid, but Heller only accepted four.

Citizens for Higher Ethics in Government wanted to recall Brown because her husband, a former informant for the Drug Enforcement Agency, owned chemical stores that sold substances found in illegal methamphetamine labs.
