Suspect ruled out as serial rapist

A 45-year-old man accused of raping a woman near Washington Avenue and Main Street has been ruled out as the serial rapist, who remains at large after terrorizing the valley since December 1996.

Metro Police Lt. Tom Monahan said Gary Phillips does not match the physical description the seven serial rape victims have provided, and possesses no means of transportation that could have carried him to the area of Flamingo and Pecos roads where the majority of the attacks have happened.

"We certainly considered the possibility, because we are leaving no stone unturned," Monahan said, regarding the department's ongoing effort to identify and apprehend their suspect. "We do not believe there is a connection here with the serial rapist."

Phillips is accused of attacking his 45-year-old victim July 7 about 5 a.m. near the railroad tracks between Washington and Bonanza Road. He is scheduled to appear in court July 23 on charges of sexual assault, battery with a rock, battery with intent to commit sexual assault and first-degree kidnapping.

Phillips and the victim were acquainted with one another and lived within the same homeless camp near the site of the attack, Monahan said.

Police found Phillips hiding under a bush shortly after the victim reported the attack, Monahan said.

The serial rapist was last known to strike May 18 at the Flamingo West Apartments, 3950 Mountain Vista.

Investigators in recent weeks have been able to cross many names off a lengthy list of possible suspects.

"It's a point of progress," Monahan said. "The number of people we've been able to exclude is increasing."

Police are encouraged that nearly two months have passed without another reported assault.

"Hopefully people are taking precautions and keeping their homes locked," Monahan said.
