Letter: Those who would allow desecration of flag need lesson in respect

I am writing in response to a letter to the editor written by Jennifer Gryder (July 8), which states that she sees nothing wrong with burning the U.S. flag as a form of expression, and that Congress shouldn't take measures to protect the flag from being burned as a form of expression.

As a Vietnam veteran who has seen death up close, it's appalling that some Americans have no respect for the flag, but gladly enjoy the freedom it represents. Many Americans have given their lives to protect Old Glory and for what it stands for.

To people that feel as she does: I say, America, love it or leave it -- the flag's not going away. If they want to they can express their feelings, get active in the election process and if eligible, join the military and see firsthand, what protecting the flag is all about.

Last, but not least, I appeal to Gryder and others who feel as she does to visit a cemetery and in particular a veteran's cemetery, and get an up-close view of the price paid to protect our flag, country and freedom.
