School bond supporters launch campaign

Supporters on Monday launched a campaign, called "Yes, Yes for Kids," to generate backing for the two-part ballot question.

The first part, for $131 million, would pay for new high schools and other improvements and would not require a property tax increase.

Part B seeks approval of another $47 million to fund four elementary schools, vocational facilities and additional improvements. It would cost the owner of a $150,000 home another $21 a year in property taxes.

Voters rejected a $196 million bond sale two years ago.

"I voted against the bond in 1996 and I have a lot of friends who did," said former Lt. Gov. Sue Wagner, who serves on the "Yes, Yes for Kids," steering committee.

"The questions that I had, and many people had, have been answered. That's history and now it's time to move on," she said.

Gov. Bob Miller has voiced his support for the measure, as has members of the Reno and Sparks city councils, state legislators, law enforcement officials and local business people.
