Columnist Peter Benton: Score of 110 wins LVCC scramble

THE FORMAT FOR THE Las Vegas Country Club's members best ball scramble was as follows: Each four-person team selected the best tee shot on each hole (mandatory to use every player's tee shot at least twice), with all players then playing their own ball into the hole from the location of that selected tee shot.

The two lowest net scores of the teams, (playing with 75 percent of individual handicap) was used for scoring purposes.

Playing particularly well together and winning this fun-filled event rather easily was the foursome of George Jablon, Lil Weigman, Joe Johnson and Bernie Feldman with a score of 110.

Skip Marvick, Len Serfustini, Larry Fernandez and Sonnie Evans, along with the team of Frank Larsen, Pat Murphy, Cal Evans and Joanne Stevens shared second place; both foursomes coming in with 114s.

Fourth place was also shared, as the teams of Brad Fields, Peter Fischer, Lloyd Boothby and Pedie Goodwin; plus that of Rene Raynes, Steve Yamaguchi, Dennis Sabbath and Lou Buffman both came in with 115.

The 127th British Open is due to get under way Thursday at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, on England's northwest coast. This par-70, 7,018-yard layout has relatively flat fairways set amongst sand dunes and has an unusual record, inasmuch as no European has ever won there. Although quite meaningless, a betting man may possibly lean toward somebody from Down Under, an American perhaps, or, goodness me, even a Brit.

LPGA phenom Se Ri Pak was the recipient of a $290,000 bonus check from one of her sponsors after she won last month's McDonald's LPGA Championship. It was estimated that the clothing being worn, (complete with Samsung logo), by this South Korean 20-year-old received an estimated $150 million in free advertising. That being the case, what could be in store for rookie Se Ri after these past two weeks: A playoff to capture the U.S. Women's Open, plus a wire-to-wire, 9-stroke victory in last week's Jamie Farr Classic.

Coming up Aug. 24 at the Stallion Mountain Country Club is the fifth annual YMCA Golf Tournament, this one benefiting the association's "Yes to Youth" program for at-risk youngsters.
