Suspects arrested in kidnapping of elderly woman

Richard Haines, 29, Sun Valley, Nev., was charged with kidnapping, robbery, burglary, crimes against the elderly, use of a deadly weapon and other charges.

The 73-year-old woman allegedly surprised Haines in her apartment during a burglary attempt about 4:30 a.m. on July 11, Reno Police Sgt. Doug McPartland said.

Haines allegedly threatened her with a knife and tied her up on her bed while he ransacked the apartment.

Police got a description of Haines when he and others tried to make a purchase at a local bicycle shop with the victim's credit card that same day.

He was arrested at an address in Sun Valley on Tuesday.

An alleged accomplice, William Chinn, 35, Reno, was charged with possession and use of the victim's credit cards, and Deborah Leite, 44, Reno, was arrested for attempting to cash one of the stolen checks.
