Citizens group to interview top school superintendent candidates

An executive search firm recommended the five from a pool of about 40 who applied for the job.

The committee of parents, teachers, business and community leaders will do the initial screening of the finalists and make a recommendation to the school board on Friday.

Candidates to be interviewed on Thursday were Franklin Till Jr., who is currently deputy superintendent in San Diego, and Agustin Orci, an executive at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.

James Hager, schools superintendent at Kent, Wash., and Laramie County, Wyo., superintendent Robert Myers were to be interviewed on Friday.

An interview with Washoe County assistant superintendent James Welsh was to be split over both days.

The search for a new school chief follows the departure of Mary Nebgen, who left after eight years to pursue a law degree.

Former superintendent Marvin Moss is filling the post on a temporary basis until a permanent replacement is chosen.
