Kerr-McGee offers plan to stop perchlorate

Pat Corbett, manager of the plant near Henderson, said the problem of clearing contaminated water before it reaches Southern Nevada's drinking water supply involves complex soils, rapid flows and an unknown amount of perchlorate.
The company is building an 11-acre basin to catch contaminated water on its property. Perchlorate has been used to treat thyroid conditions, but the substance can interfere with children's growth in very high doses.
The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection must approve any plan. NDEP officials expect to meet with Kerr-McGee next week.
