Thursday, July 16, 1998 | 9:12 a.m.
The motorcyclist, John Baird, 53, of Anchorage, Alas., died shortly after the accident Tuesday just north of Stephanie Way. A passenger, Jerry Roop, 33, was airlifted to Washoe Medical Center in Reno, where he was listed in serious condition. The driver of the truck, David Crossman, 18, of Gardnerville, and passenger Lynn Crossman, 45, weren't hurt.
Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Simon said Crossman had slowed for dogs that ran onto the road, and the motorcycle driver may have been talking to his passenger when he hit the truck.
Simon said alcohol wasn't suspected, but speed may have been a factor in the fatality.
