Editorial: Residents give aid to Salvation Army

These good times also have lured many non-Nevadans looking for a new start. As many of them soon find out, especially those who have limited job skills, there isn't work for everyone.

People down on their luck often seek a helping hand, turning to a number of charitable organizations in the valley, including the Salvation Army. So it was troubling when the Sun reported that the Salvation Army had to close its doors last week because it had run out of food.

Las Vegans came through remarkably, though, helping the Salvation Army open its doors again. "In the 20 years I have been working for Salvation Army, I have never seen a response like this. It is so wonderful that the community is helping us," Sumner Dodge, director of family services for the Salvation Army, said.

Because of the help, from individual donors to big companies, the Salvation Army's pantry went from bare to more than 50,000 cans of food in a matter of days. There are many areas that need improvement in the valley, but it's heartwarming to know that generosity isn't one of them.
