Sprint warns public about fake phone workers

Sprint is investigating a possible phone scam that could be targeting Las Vegans.

An area resident reported that she received a phone call from someone claiming to be a phone company employee. The resident said that the person was belligerent and rude and that he might have been trying to use her phone for his own calls.

The resident seems to be the only one who experienced this type of call, Sprint officials said.

"We are still checking to see if we can determine what the call was," said Sprint spokesperson Detra Page on Thursday. "This is a very unusual occurrence."

Sprint also is trying to find out if it is possible for someone to break in and use another person's phone line, Page said.

Usually the biggest complaint that Sprint receives is from slamming, or the switching of a customers to a different long distance company without telling the customer, Page said.

"People often get their services switched when they send in sweepstakes forms," Page said. "They also get services added to their phones that they may not want."

Sprint employees carry company-issued badges that contain the employee's first and last name and employee number.

Sprint advises that residents ask callers claiming to be phone company representatives if they work for Sprint and if they say yes to get their name an employee number.
