State hires health officer

CARSON CITY -- An Atlanta physician has been named Nevada's state health officer, a post that has been vacant for 17 months.
The state Health Division said Thursday that Dr. Mary Guinan, a research scientist at the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will assume her new job Sept. 14.
She succeeds Dr. Donald Kwalick, who resigned in January 1997 to join the Clark County Health District, which he now heads.
Luana Ritch, spokeswoman for the health division, said the delay in filling the job was because of requirements that the individual selected be experienced in public health and in preventive medicine.
The pay ranges from $117,258 to $121,665.
In her work at the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Guinan directed the evaluation of programs to stop the spread of the HIV virus.
