Sunset Beach denied by Planning Commission

The Henderson Planning Commission Thursday denied a zoning change needed for a 16,000-square-foot casino that has been in the planning stage for about 15 months.

Earlier in the week the commission's staff recommended the request by Sunset Beach Resort be denied because it failed to meet requirements of a pending City Council ordinance.

The main requirement is that such a project be on 25 acres -- Sunset Beach Resort has only 9 acres.

Two people, one a nearby businessman and the other a nearby resident, objected to the project on the grounds it would create traffic problems and is not suited for the area.

The casino developers have several options including appealing the decision to the City Council, convincing the Council to reject the ordinance, suing the city or redesigning the project so it complies with the proposed ordinance.
