Weekend Update: Music, Theater, Etc.

Symphony under the stars -- A trio of performers will join the Henderson Civic Symphony at 7:30 tonight for another installment of the Twilight in the Plaza summer concert series, sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Whitney Skidmore, a Green Valley High School graduate and winner of the symphony's Young Artists competition, will sing a pair of arias by Strauss and Puccini. An electric harp duo, comprised of Caryn Wunderlich Gott and Michelle Gott, will perform a melody of pieces from "Les Miserables." In addition, the symphony will present "Ave Marie," "Carmen," "Granada" and the "Titanic" movie theme, "My Heart Will Go On." Bring chairs, blankets and picnics to the concert at Civic Center Plaza, 200 Water Street.

Breathe deeply -- Steve Reid and Jeff Kashiwa, founding members of the Rippingtons, along with the Bamboo Forest band, will perform at "A Breath of Fresh Air." The jazz concert, on Sunday at Foxridge Park in Green Valley, is a benefit to help the families of local children with brain injuries offset the high costs of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. concert. Tickets are $25 for adults; children ages 12 and under are free. Call 990-1000 for more information.

Do a little dance -- Cut a rug at 7 p.m. Saturday to the sounds of The Carl Grove Combo when it performs in the Charleston Heights Arts Center Ballroom, 800 South Brush St. Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door for the program, which is sponsored by the Cultural and Community Affairs Division of the City of Las Vegas Department of Parks and Leisure Activities. Going ga-ga -- An accomplished cast presents the Tony award-winning Gershwin musical extravaganza "Crazy for You," Wednesdays through Saturdays, through Aug. 1, at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. Las Vegas Academy graduate Adam Kaokept, who stars as Bobby, recently completed his first national tour with "Bye-Bye, Birdie." Brigham Young University student Blythe Jordan, who plays Polly, recently appeared on the the television series "Touched by an Angel." Park gates open at 6 p.m. for the musical, which begins at 8:10 p.m. Tickets -- $7 for adults, $4 for seniors, children ages 6-18 and the physically challenged -- may be purchased by calling Artemus Ham Hall box office at 895-3801.

Family ties -- The We Tell Stories group presents "Cuentos de la Familia" (Stories of the Family), in both English and Spanish, at 7 p.m. today at Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Part of the Children's Summer Concert Series, the family fables remind us that what is learned in the home shapes and guides us through life. Tickets are $3. Call 229-6211 for more details.

Attention, sports fans -- Montreal Canadians and National Hockey League All-Star Shayne Corson, and Former Oakland and Los Angeles Raider Frank Hawkins, will be on hand to sign autographs at the Sportscards and Collectibles Show Saturday and Sunday at Sam's Town hotel-casino, 5111 Boulder Highway.
